Summary/Abstract: Despite the extensive scholarship on Poland's post-1989 systemic transformation, the trajectories of sports organizations remain insufficiently examined in social research. This article addresses that gap by analysing how political, economic, and institutional change affected football clubs rooted in the state-enterprise sport model under state socialism. Its aim is to reconstruct and compare the transformational trajectories of three clubs: GKS Zagłębie Wałbrzych, LKS Igloopol Dębica, and BKS Lechia Gdańsk. They shared a multi-section structure and dependence on industrial or institutional patrons in the Polish People's Republic, but differed in local economic conditions, social resources, and subsequent paths of reconstruction. The study adopts a qualitative case-study design based on desk research, including scholarly literature, historical studies, press materials, online sources and publications devoted to the clubs under analysis. The findings show that deindustrialization and the deinstitutionalization of sport disrupted established mechanisms of financing, undermined access to infrastructure, generated debt, and led to mergers, collapse or organizational restructuring. Transformation therefore, meant not only a change in the rules of sports management, but also a profound reconfiguration of relations between clubs, local economies, municipal authorities, and supporter communities. The cases demonstrate that there was no single model of transition for sports clubs. The depth of crisis and the possibility of reactivation depended on local economic structures, relations with local government, the symbolic importance of club tradition, and the mobilization of supporters. The article argues that a fuller understanding of the Polish transformation requires sport to be incorporated into broader analyses of systemic change.
