Summary/Abstract: The article aims to present the ageing of the rural population alongside a parallel reduction in the care resources available to the family and the local environment, and to identify the determinants of these processes. These include the demographic, cultural, economic, and health situation of the inhabitants, and the processes of internal migration (rural-to-urban migration) and external migration (migration abroad, especially by women). In addition, an effort is made to determine the extent to which the caregiving capacity of rural families has changed over the past several years. Migration plays a significant role in this regard. Therefore, based on the literature, the scope of care provided by emigrant women to elderly parents in Poland is presented. The conclusions emphasize that the changes taking place in rural areas are causing growing care deficits. These changes create a need for external, usually institutional, support for the older generation in rural areas, but also for the mobilization of the social resources of the rural community.
