Summary/Abstract: This article aims to demonstrate the limited usefulness of the annual percentage rate (APR), as implemented within the European Union through the annual percentage rate of charge (APRC), in assessing the total cost of consumer credit. This limitation arises from the sensitivity of the APR outcome to variations in parameters related to the performance of the credit agreement. The research method is based on calculating the APR for a fixed loan amount, interest rate, and commission, across several scenarios differing in the repayment period, type of installment (fixed versus decreasing), and the timing of additional charges. The calculations were performed using Microsoft Excel. The findings indicate that the APR is significantly influenced by the number and structure of installments, as well as the timing of additional credit-related charges. The results challenge the validity of relying on APR as the sole the criterion for evaluating the terms of consumer credit agreements.
