Summary/Abstract: This paper represents the discourse held by Professor Gerhard Wirth, in March 2001, at the festive assembly gathered for rendering him the title doctor honoris causa of the “Dunărea de Jos” University of Galaţi. As at the time the History Department could not edit the text, the author gave it for publication to the Ancient Society review (31, 2001; 69-105). Thus, it is an honour for the History Department to republish the text in the newly-issued scientific bulletin of the Faculty of History and Philosophy.
