Summary/Abstract: The interwar period in Romania was marked by significant debates on military doctrine. One of the main forums for these debates was the specialised military press, with România Militară at the forefront. These journals offered officers a platform through which to assess strategic ideas against the realities of Romania’s geography, regional threats and material constraints. Romanian military theorists discussed the nature of modern warfare, the structure of the armed forces and the country’s strategic posture within an unstable European security environment.Contributors identified with striking clarity the core dilemmas facing Romanian defence policy: the simultaneous threat posed by three revisionist neighbours (the USSR, Hungary and Bulgaria) and a limited industrial base that restricted the development and acquisition of modern weaponry.Throughout the interwar years, these debates addressed contentious issues such as the suitability of French tactical models, the balance between offensive and defensive strategies and the role of modern technologies such as aviation, tanks, and mechanised forces.
