Summary/Abstract: RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The cognitive objective is to examine the evolution of approaches to the issue of economic and social inequalities in contemporary economic thought. The analytical objective is to examine economic and social inequalities in the European Union (EU) and to identify its position. RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The research problem is economic and social inequalities in theoretical and practical terms. The methods used in the research include: literature studies, analysis and logical construction, and multidimensional comparative analysis. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The process of argumentation comprises three elements: 1. a theoretical study of the discussed problem on the basis of contemporary economic thought; 2. identifying the EU's position on inequalities; 3. quantitative research on economic and social inequalities in the EU. RESEARCH RESULTS: Inequalities are at the center of interest of the social sciences, including economics. Economic theory explains the causes of inequality and indicates tools for reducing it. The problem of inequality also concerns the EU. The EU adapts measures aimed at reducing inequalities to internal and external conditions. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS, RECOMMENDATIONS: Economic theory is evolving and determines the tools for combating economic and social inequalities. Inequalities in the EU result from disparities in income, health, employment, and the state of public finances. Instability in the global economy affects inequalities in the EU and forces the EU to implement new initiatives.
