The Poetic Function of Postmodernist Motifs of a Book and Library in the Novel At the Lucky Hand by Goran Petrović

Summary/Abstract: Several postmodernist motifs such as books, libraries, encyclopedias, palimpsests, garden labyrinths, mirrors, and unicorns are present in Sitničarnica ,,Kod srećne ruke“ (At the Lucky Hand) novel by Goran Petrović,. This paper analyzes the dominant postmodernist motifs of the book and the library, shifting away from their traditional semantic roles in classic postmodernist works to examine their transformation and reconfiguration in accordance with the author’s creative vision and their defining poetic function. The motif of the book in the Sitničarnica ,,Kod srećne ruke“ (At the Lucky Hand) novel points to the infinite, endless book, an “open work” in accordance with postmodern poetics, while also opening up new semantic fields. It shapes the narrative structure and the poetic key of the novel, implies the creation of a new novel, forms a foundation for developing a poetics of reading, introduces the fantasy genre, and defines the reader’s experience, while also engaging in ironic and parodic reconsiderations of poetic argumentation through the lens of reception theory. The motif of the book brings different levels of reality into focus through the embedding of text within text, raising questions of metatextuality. It also initiates a shift from the passion for reading to the act of creation, raising the issue of creation and poetic self-awareness as crucial elements in the formation of the literary work. Through the introduction and reconfiguration of this motif, the novel problematizes the question of artistic reality as well as the relationship between the reality of the surrounding world and artistic reality. The book motif forms a syncretic unity with related motifs such as the encyclopedia, the garden, the labyrinth, and the palimpsest. On the historical level of representation, this motif emphasizes the question of ideological function, encompassing a broader picture of social reality, but also the antagonism between story and history. It intertwines with the motif of the library, which symbolizes the chronotope of the life of one of the characters, Mrs. Dimitrijević, representing a paradisiacal garden, a space of happiness, the endless realm of literature and the infinite book, but also a socially bounded space of struggle against the enemies of creation and art.
