The Poetic Horizons of Borisav Stanković’s Poetry

Summary/Abstract: This paper examines the poetic and thematic features of Borisav Stanković’s early poetry, written predominantly during his high school period, proceeding from the assumption that this corpus exceeds the framework of youthful literary attempts and represents an important stage in his literary and poetic self-formation. Building upon the documentary and bibliographical reconstruction established by Siniša Paunović, the study offers an interpretative and poetic analysis of several poems such as „Stan’te suze“ (“Tears, stop“), „Drugu“ (“To a Friend“), „Od onog časa“ (“From That Moment“), „Majka na grobu svog jedinca“ (“A Mother on the Grave of Her Only Child“), „Želja“ (“A Wish“), „Počuj pesmu“ (“Hear the Poem“) among others), with particular attention devoted to the motifs of loss, shattered ideals, emotional and existential collapse, death, poem, and spiritual continuity. The analysis demonstrates that these texts already contain emotional and poetic structures that would later acquire more complex psychological and artistic articulation in Stanković’s prose and drama. Special emphasis is placed on different models of understanding death and loss, ranging from lament and familial grief to patriotic and collective horizons of sacrifice, as well as on the gradual shaping of the idea of song and literature as spaces of inner survival, memory, and spiritual connectedness. The paper argues that Stanković’s early lyric poetry constitutes an important testimony to the formation of his poetic world and an essential component for understanding his later literary work.
