About Establishing a National holiday: A Day of Remembrance to the Fallen for Homeland

Summary/Abstract: Young Serbian state had introduced several official puЬ!ic holidays during the XIX century. One of them was а Day of Remembrance for those fallen in the sti·uggle for the homeland. Memorializing the fallen heroes was started in the period of the First Serbian Uprising, and was connected to celebration of Day of St. Andrew, protector of SerЬia. That Remembrance day had а !оса! character and reffered only to those who had fallen in the struggle for Belgrade in 1806. During 1857 ап official pub!ic Day of Remembrance for all who died in the uprising struggles between 1804 and 1815 was introdпced. The holiday was marked during the first Saturday after Day of St. Andrew, protector of Serbia. In the following decades the Day of Remembrance was subject to changes, and also his character was widened. On the occasion of the 500'" anniversary of the Battle ofKosovo in 1889, the Day of Remembrance was linked to St. Vitus's Day, and begun to Ье marked on Јпnе 15"'. On that occasion the remebrance was expanded to all those who had eve1· given their Iife in the struggle for the homeland. Тiе-пр with St. Vitus 's Day gave the Day of Rembrance necessary historical legitimacy and sacral backgroпnd, and thus assured its popularity.
