Summary/Abstract: Owing to political instrumentalisation, cultural tradition of the Serbian middle classes were almost always either uncritically attacked or uncritically favoured. Thus, there is not wonder that they have survived in the collective memory only as symbols. Therefore knowledge about them is relatively poor. The analysis of the literary production of the Serbian 18th century has shown that 408 books were published during that century. Little more than one third of the published books had teological charater (140). It has to be pointed out that in certain number of the profane books and books printed in foreign languages (268), religios contents prevailed (in school “primers”), while the great number of the books represented the religious spirit of the epoch in its context. At the very beginning of the century, exclusively teological books were published, while first profane books appeared in 1720-ies. Production of profane books prevailed at the end of the century. The analysis have shown that the most attention of Serbian middle classes was directed to schooling, education of children (47 textbooks and 16 educational books), but there was also a great interest in literature by domestic writers (46 books), and foreign ones (24 translations), history etc. Impulses of modernisation impulses are visible in the producition, such as printing of the first newpapers or practical handbooks for everydaylife. The comparison between Serbian and Greek tradi-tion of this epoch is interesting. Greeks have published much greater number of the books (1400), while more than 50% of the titles were of religious or teological character.
