Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to show the social context of the functioning of allotment gardens with a particular focus on the allotment holders. The article is based on existing materials, which include statistical data as well as written sources and, above all, preliminary qualitative research among allotment holders in Rożnów on Dunajec, Krakow and Krzeszowice. The research topic was motivated by a desire to identify the general opinion on allotment gardens with the contemporary manifestations of their functioning and also to show their role in the currently changing world entangled ideologically, politically or focused on the realisation of individual human needs. Preliminary research has shown the continuing importance of allotment gardens, especially in times of pandemics, as a substitute for one's private land, where allotment holders can cultivate plants and derive benefits from them, build various structures defined by law in this area, which is not possible in urban areas. The research showed the attachment to RODs as well as their cultural and social significance due to the formation of a specific "culture of allotment gardeners". The article is part of the current discourse on urban participation and alternative forms of spending time.
