Summary/Abstract: The article concerns the reception of three texts included in the first part of 'Szkice' ('Sketches') by Julian Kaliszewski (Klin). It discusses reviews of these works published in the Warsaw press between 1868 and 1869, in the context of the major debates at the turn of the 1860s and 1870s. The polemics surrounding 'Szkice' rhetorically intensified contemporary critical discourse, while at the same time revealing a substantial degree of convergence in critical assessments, a situational fluidity of evaluative criteria, and argumentative patterns that frequently reappeared in other debates of the period in markedly different configurations. The article aims to demonstrate that the reception of Kaliszewski’s work, owing to his resistance to clear-cut ideological classification, brought together diverse elements of the intellectual ferment of the period, often identified as distinct or even adversarial, without, however, negating the emerging worldview distinctions within contemporary journalism.
