'Responsibility for the Social Penny'. Janusz Korczak/Henryk Goldszmit and the Youth Cooperativism of 'Młody Spółdzielca'

Summary/Abstract: In interwar Poland, Janusz Korczak sympathised with cooperative movements. He also collaborated with 'Młody Spółdzielca' [Young Cooperative Member], although he published articles in the magazine questioning its unambiguously optimistic propaganda. The aim of this article is to analyse the differences and similarities between the educational programme of 'Młody Spółdzielca' and Korczak’s programme from a cultural history perspective, as well as to show how these programmes were embedded in the history of the Polish intelligentsia and its ethos, what social and political discourses they were associated with, and what problems they could provoke. In this text, I assume that school cooperatives in the Second Polish Republic have not yet been thoroughly researched, and that it is interesting in that it allows us to capture, in a broader perspective, the interwar reflection on introducing young people to the world of economics and how economics itself was presented to young people as the art of understanding not only market mechanisms related to trade, investment and money, but also the ethically proper management of goods such as time and labour.
