Summary/Abstract: This article contains a sketch of the analysis of the two-part cycle „Improvisation and Toccatina” signed by VladimirRotaru, from the perspective of the technical capabilities of the dulcimer in expressing the artistic content of the work. The first of the two pieces for solo dulcimer by V. Rotaru is close to the folkloric doina species. In it, the composer embodies lyrical, meditative, epic images and uses the principles of constructing the form inherent in improvisation. Toccatina vividly expressesthe dynamic energy of perpetuum mobile, nuanced with elements of Moldavian dance. Thus, we understand that V. Rotaruinterprets the dulcimer as a solo instrument, equally capable of expressing lyricism and motor expression. This finding allowedthe author to approach the evolution of the musical instrument, which was initially characteristic of folklore, but entered thearsenal of academic music and significantly expanded its technical and interpretative capabilities.
