An Analytic of Cisness. Toward its Abolition

Summary/Abstract: In her lecture delivered at SWPS University in Warsaw on 24 January 2025, Professor of Literature Emma Heaney advances the following proposition: rather than analysing gender and the binary, we should instead focus on analysing cisness and patriarchy. This materialist approach, drawing on gender and race studies as well as Marxist feminism, challenges both contemporary queer theory and medicalized narratives of transness. Through the concept of cisness, which has become central to her recent work, Heaney develops an alternative not only to the anti-trans feminist position she opposes, but also to a reductive, identity-based account of gender.
