Summary/Abstract: A character is “a fictional person, male or female, brought to life in a dramatic work” (Littré). Theorists speak of an ambiguity in the nature of the character, given that the modern meaning is a person who plays a role, while the Latin word *persona*, from which *personnage / personaj* is formed, has the meaning of a mask, that is, the role played by the actor.
