Summary/Abstract: The romantic drama of historical inspiration, as it flourished in the first half of the nineteenth century, stages a confrontation between reason and imagination, historical lucidity and visionary vertigo. In the works of Hugo, Vigny, and Musset, phantasia (the power of imagination inherited from the ancient tradition) merges with unreason and becomes a principle of poetic invention. This article analyzes the interactions between phantasia and madness in Hernani, Chatterton, and Lorenzaccio, showing how unreason underpins a poetics of freedom and crisis, in which the dramatic imagination reveals the tensions of a century caught between idealism and disenchantment.
