Summary/Abstract: The digital era has brought extraordinary progress in almost all fields: communication, medicine, education, and science. However, along with these benefits come ethical issues as well - such as the way personal data is used, the influence of artificial intelligence, the spread of misinformation, and dependence on technology. In today’s digital environment, complying with the law is not enough; we must also consider the ethical dimension of data processing. The EU regulatory framework already allows room for flexible decisions and protections, depending on each case, when handling personal information. Online ethics refers to a set of principles and values that guide our behaviour in the digital environment. This includes respect for others, responsibility for one’s actions, integrity, and empathy. Online ethics is not just about following legal rules, but also about making moral choices. Ethics in the virtual space represents a set of “good conduct” rules in the online world – just like good manners we follow when interacting with others in real life but applied to online communication. This concept emerged from the need to protect users in the digital environment, as risks and inappropriate behaviours increased. Most often, a clear violation of ethics is understood as insults and personal attacks, deliberate deviation from the discussed topic, advertising, and self-promotion in places not intended for that purpose. Additionally, this also includes slander, fraud, misinformation, and plagiarism.
