Summary/Abstract: In the second half of the 20th century, Romanian musical culture was profoundly marked by the innovative artistic movement of the avant-garde. Operating without predetermined rules, the avant-garde rejected any form of conservatism and promoted new aesthetic and expressive paradigms. The historiographic aspects of this phenomenon underline the processes of organizing, documenting, and promoting contemporary creation, highlighting the cultural and social context that encouraged the emergence of initiatives, associations, and ensembles dedicated to stimulating creation and promoting contemporary music. Among the significant milestones of this process are: the establishment of the George Enescu Prize, initiated by the great composer; the founding of the New Music Association by Mihail Jora and of the Chamber Music Association by violinist Alexandru Theodorescu; the launch of the Wind Ensemble conducted by Matei Socor (1940) and of the Șarvaș Quartet (1946); the publication of the journal Muzica (1950); the organization of the Romanian Music Week Festival (1951), followed later by the Romanian Music Decade (1953); and the establishment of the Youth Quartet and the Radio Quartet, among others. The following period was marked by the creation of diverse ensembles, including duos, trios, quartets, quintets, as well as orchestral groups dedicated to promoting contemporary music. In the Republic of Moldova, the first contemporary music ensemble, Ars poetica, was founded only in 1991 at the initiative of composer Ghenadie Ciobanu.
