Summary/Abstract: The work of family probation officers is one of many opportunities for social support. However, it has a unique nature because it does not occur because of a clearly expressed need on the part of the family. Probation officer supervision is imposed by the court. It creates a challenge in probation work, as it is based on building relationships founded on trust, which is difficult to achieve in circumstances of coercion. This creates strong connotations with the category of “imposed assistance.” The aim of this article is to describe the fieldwork of family probation officers from the perspective of “imposed assistance” and to demonstrate how probation officers ensure the autonomy of their wards. The present research is based on empirical material collected through ethnographic research with the participation of family probation officers. To gather this information, I employed open participant observation and fieldwork interviews.
