Summary/Abstract: This paper explores the transformative impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on the accounting profession, with a particular focus on the transition from traditional bookkeeping and compliance-oriented activities towards strategic, technology-driven and advisory roles. The topic is particularly relevant in the context of ongoing digital transformation, as automation, data analytics, digital technologies, and AI-enabled accounting systems reshape the way financial information is processed, analyzed, and interpreted. The paper adopts a theoretical and conceptual approach based on academic literature, professional publications, and reports issued by leading accounting and professional organizations. Rather than presenting primary empirical or numerical data, the study synthesizes existing research on the ways in which AI and related technologies influence accounting practices, professional competencies, and ethical responsibilities. The literature indicates that technologies such as machine learning, robotic process automation, and natural language processing can enhance efficiency, accuracy, anomaly detection, and decision support while reducing the burden associated with repetitive accounting tasks. At the same time, the increasing use of AI introduces challenges related to transparency, data privacy, cybersecurity, algorithmic bias, professional responsibility, and ethical governance. Overall, the theoretical evidence suggests that AI is more likely to transform than eliminate the accounting profession. By automating routine activities, AI can enable accountants to devote greater attention to interpretation, strategic analysis, advisory services, and professional judgment. Consequently, the future relevance of accountants will increasingly depend on their ability to combine accounting expertise with technological literacy, analytical thinking, ethical awareness, communication skills, and continuous learning.
