Summary/Abstract: As the most common response to the Great Depression of 1929–1933, consideration is usually given to the ideas of John M. Keynes and the New Deal applied in the United States by president Franklin D. Roosevelt. In Germany, the intellectual response was ordoliberalism, which was looking for an alternative ‘third way’ between a laissez-faire capitalism and a centrally controlled collective economy. The article discusses main economic and social policy programs of ordoliberalism, developed by its major representatives: Walter Eucken, Wilhelm Röpke and Alexander Rüstow. This presentation is preceded by a description of how ordoliberal economists perceived economic and social crisis of their time. The article is composed, besides introduction and concluding remarks, of 8 parts, dealing successively with the following issues: (a) crisis of laissez-faire capitalism, (b) genesis of ordoliberalism, (c) diagnosis of social crisis, (d) curing capitalism, (e) defense of the market, (f) efficient government, (g) economic policy, (h) social question.
