Summary/Abstract: The article presents the results of a study on adolescents' understanding of the concept of symmetry. The aim of the research was to enrich theoretical knowledge by analyzing students' progression to higher levels of mathematical abstraction during photo-stimulated activities. Teaching situations, based on photographing real objects, were created to enable students to deepen their knowledge of symmetry. The empirical goal was to find individual differences in the ability and limitations of the students studied to form mathematical meta-concepts. The subjects were tested to determine individual differences (in terms of stress coping style, type of intelligence and personality traits). The research revealed that it is possible for adolescents to use the concept of symmetry at the meta level. Correlations were established between adolescents' understanding of the concept of symmetry and their personality traits, intelligence type and coping strategies in stressful situations.
