Summary/Abstract: The tradition of “dağ” and “dağlamak” is an element of material culture. In ancient Turkish culture, it was first used to brand animals, especially horses, and later in medical treatment and decorative arts. Because it involved marking the body with a red-hot iron, it gradually came to symbolize the classical poet’s heartache, incurable sorrow, and lasting anguish. The words “dağ” and “dağlamak,” rooted in a concrete practice, were explored in classical Turkish poetry through multiple layers of meaning and became recurring poetic motifs. Digital technology, with its capacity to process large textual corpora, provides valuable opportunities to examine linguistic diversity, while digital dictionaries support the annotation, interpretation, and analysis of classical Turkish literary texts. This study analyzes the words “dağ” and “dağlamak” in classical Turkish literature using various sources, particularly the TEBDİZ and LEHÇEDİZ digital dictionary databases, and evaluates these systems through practical examples. It first explains the dictionary definitions of both terms, then illustrates their semantic layers through contextual indexes and functional lexicons. Their compounds, proverbs, idioms, and colloquial uses are also examined. Finally, the article discusses their historical usage, etymological and morphological development, and reveals their semantic layers in classical Turkish poetry.
