STIGMATIZATION PROCESSES OF THE MIGRANT IDENTITY: AN ANALYSIS OF ELLBOGEN BY FATMA AYDEMIR WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF STIGMA THEORY

Summary/Abstract: This study examines Ellbogen, the novel published in 2017 by the post-migrant Turkish-German author Fatma Aydemir, through the theoretical framework of sociologist Erving Goffman's stigma theory. It first discusses the phenomenon of migration and migrant literature, followed by an explanation of Goffman's theory of stigma. After introducing the author and the novel, the study analyzes the text through qualitative textual analysis based on this theoretical framework. According to Goffman, stigma is a process of social labeling that excludes individuals from socially accepted categories of "normality" and shapes both their self-perception and social relationships This process takes three main forms: physical, character-based, and ethnic stigmas. Focusing on ethnic stigmas associated with race, nationality, and religion, this study examines the experiences of exclusion, othering, and stigmatization encountered by the novel's protagonist, Hazal, as a young woman of migrant background in Germany. Hazal, as a young woman of migrant background in Germany. It also demonstrates that stigma is not confined to a particular geographical context but continues after Hazal's arrival in Turkey. Accordingly, Hazal's move to Turkey is interpreted not as a conventional narrative of "returning home" but as a continuation of the process of stigmatization. The study demonstrates that otherness is not a fixed identity but is constructed through a continuously reconstructed process that remains open to stigmatization.
