Summary/Abstract: A critical examination of Etleva Smaçi’s book, Shqipëria në Traktatin e Varshavës: Mite dhetë Vërteta (1955–1968) [Albania in the Warsaw Pact: Myths and Truth (1955–1968)], helpsassess its importance for research on Albania’s Cold War history. It also reveals importantmethodological problems. The author analyses Albania’s role in the Warsaw Pact, focusingon military ties with the USSR and the Vlorë naval base. Moscow meant for this base tobe a key Mediterranean point. She describes Enver Hoxha’s initial support for Soviet plansand the deep political split with Moscow that began after 1961.The publication lacks an introductory chapter to organise the event chronology and toplace the issues discussed in a wider global context. Still, the book is an important andmuch-needed resource for Albania’s Cold War history. Its value, though, is limited by theunderuse of existing scholarship and the lack of archival sources from the USSR and Yugo-slavia. This weakens the overall analysis.
