Neology and lexicography: recording variants

Summary/Abstract: The operations involved in the digitization of the Romanian printed dictionaries have highlighted a rather unusual lexicographic procedure used even in normative dictionaries: multiple entries. This procedure, graphically supported by a slash or a brace, was used to group free literary variants. The main category of words subject to this lexicographical solution is that of neologisms. In the neologism dictionaries of the 19th century (including Negulici 1848) this procedure was used given the loan from different sources or the various options for phonetic and/or morphological adaptation of the new words. In the Dictionary of the Romanian Language (the old series DA), Sextil Pușcariu opted for multiple entries, especially in the case of regionalisms and neologisms with (still) fluctuating use in the language at that time. Variants of different types (lexical, accentual, etc.), especially neological, are represented by double entries in the Orthographic, Orthoepic and Morphological Dictionary (DOOM3). This text aims to exemplify and present considerations on multiple entries as a lexicographic solution for recording neologisms with fluctuating use.
