Summary/Abstract: In this article, I have presented a series of considerations related to the major geopolitical events that took place in Eastern Europe during the years 1989-1993 and their impact on Romania. In order to understand this international context, I used the works of specialists in this field. Some experts point out that the fall of the Berlin Wall and the implosion of the Soviet Union changed the geopolitical position of Romania, placing it in an uncertain and undecided area in terms of its geopolitical orientation. On the other hand, others claim that in 1989, Nicolae Ceaușescu refused to accept the change and to recognise the discontent and interests of the great powers. Thus, the Romanian Revolution of 1989 led to the fall of the communist regime led by Ceaușescu and to significant changes in Romanian society. I described Romania’s transition period from the communist regime to the democratic system and the market economy in the years 1989-1993 and how, on the military level, Romania began the reform of the army during this period, with the aim of creating a modern structure, fully professionalised and interoperable with the armies of NATO member states. Objectives were set to develop capacities to simplify command and control procedures and crisis management. Finally, I described the impact of the events of December 1989 on the international situation and Romania’s foreign relations. Overall, the article highlights Romania’s efforts to align with Western values and initiate the process of integration into NATO security structures following the political and geopolitical changes in Eastern Europe since the early 1990s.
