POLITICAL GOAL – DEPENDENT MEDIA ABSTRACT

Summary/Abstract: Certain trends, even in those parts of the world commonly described as democratic, indicate that the media are increasingly subjected to attempts to influence their functioning. These attempts come from economic as well as political centers of power, even though this once seemed to be a practice that would disappear. In countries where authoritarian tendencies are evident, where the rule of law is weak, and where new models of personality cults are even being created, such attempts have become obvious and have taken the form of direct pressure on the media to lie, manipulate, or simply conceal the truth. The goal of these political actors is to remain in power and to continue governing within a captured state.
