Summary/Abstract: Without any intention of self-justification, I think it is fair to state that it is quite difficult to present the thought—especially the philosophical thought—of a man who was not a professional philosopher, that is, someone who did not have formal education in philosophy. That man is the late Alija Izetbegović. As is well known, Izetbegović was a professional lawyer, by experience a convict for verbal offense, a politician, a statesman, and the supreme commander of the armed forces during the war. The title of this paper is not a conscious avoidance of the term philosophy, but rather an attempt to focus on the texts, speeches, and practices that emphasize his engagement with the human being through values and moral principles. Of course, in order to view the world philosophically, it is not necessary to have formal training in this field, since philosophy presupposes the ability to wonder, to question, and to critically reflect on reality and on oneself. Furthermore, the difficulty also lies in the fact that the terminology used is often outside the philosophical vocabulary, and the analysis therefore requires a hermeneutical consideration of the time in which the terms are employed and of their worldview-based understanding.
