Summary/Abstract: In this paper we will examine sentences containing a cataphoric third-person pronoun in the subject position, which is the pronoun that corefers with a noun that succeeds it in the discourse. Unlike the more common type of anaphora, in which the pronoun follows the noun that it corefers with, cataphoric pronoun is used more sparsely, and it is also less researched. We will examine the differences in the possibility of use of null and overt cataphoric pronoun. The results of the pilot questionnaire confirmed the hypothesis that the differences in the possibility of use of null and overt cataphoric pronoun, arising from the specific structural constraints on cataphora, give us a specific insight into the markedness of the overt pronoun, which is particularly important in the contexts with ambiguous meaning of the pronoun, that is, the contexts with multiple possible coreferents. These insights will contribute to the understanding of the general theory of anaphora, and the processing of coreferring in language, which is in itself the goal of this research.
