Summary/Abstract: Between 1891 and 1918, both civilian and military thinkers in the French army aimed to enhance soldiers' morale and fighting spirit. Their goal was to establish a system of values that would ensure the optimal functioning of the armed forces. During the years of the First World War, many regarded Joan of Arc as the ideal model of soldierly service.
