Summary/Abstract: The phenomenon of hybrid warfare has become one of the key features of contemporary international relations. Although it was originally used to describe a combination of conventional and unconventional forms of warfare, today the term has expanded to encompass a spectrum of actions that include information operations, political manipulation, economic pressure and the use of cognitive instruments. Hybrid warfare, in this context, goes beyond the traditional dichotomy of war and peace, and is often used as an instrument of foreign policy influence and political pressure, especially in situations where direct military intervention is not desirable or possible. The ambition of this paper is to shed light on the evolution of the concept of “hybrid warfare”, from early forms of mixed tactics, through formalization in military strategy, to contemporary manifestations in the domain of cybernetics, information influence and the “gray zone”.
