Patterns of Demographic Changes in Rural Areas of Eastern Poland

Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article was to attempt to show the specificity of demographic processes and to identify patterns of demographic change in rural areas of Eastern Poland (Voivodeships: Lubelskie, Podkarpackie, Podlaskie, Świętokrzyskie, and Warmińsko-Mazurskie) in the period from the end of World War II to the present day. For the purposes of the research, diagnostic indicators were used to cover changes in population size and to illustrate the structure of the population by gender and age. In order to obtain a more complete picture of the research conducted, the spatial distribution of diagnostic indicators at the local level was used. The research showed that population changes in rural areas of Eastern Poland in 1960-2021 were characterised by significant spatial diversity resulting from historical conditions, which were compounded by the influence of geographical location (centre-periphery). In communes where there was a significant decline in population (Podlaskie and Lubelskie), unfavourable changes in the population structure by gender and age were also observed, which became permanent.
