Roma identity in the discourse of criminal reporting

Summary/Abstract: The paper examines how Slovak online news portals frame Roma identity in news discourse. It focuses on the use of ethnic markers, particularly in crime reporting, as previous research suggests such references can reinforce stereotypes and increase stigmatization of the Roma minority. The study analyzes over 300 domestic news articles from four online news platforms collected over a two-week period. Using quantitative content analysis and discourse analysis, the authors investigate the frequency and placement of ethnic markers, their association with generalization, common stigmatizing visualizations, and the thematic areas in which they occur. They hypothesize that ethnic markers will appear more often in references to Roma than to other groups, be more frequent and visible in tabloid media, and be accompanied by visual representations. They also expect that Roma-related texts contain more collectivization and generalization than texts without ethnic references.
