Summary/Abstract: This study examines the thematic and cultural structures of lullabies (layla and komoriuta) in Azerbaijani and Japanese cultures through a comparative analysis. This study aims to analyze the social values, belief systems, and cultural heritage conveyed through lullabies in both cultures, and to reveal their societal functions as a literary form. The study employs a comparative analysis method, using traditional Azerbaijani layla and Japanese komoriuta as the dataset. The study identifies and analyzes key themes — such as nature, spiritual protection, social norms, cultural imagery, and death or sorrow — to evaluate their expression in the lullabies of both cultures. Azerbaijani layla emphasize raising children to be socially compliant individuals through religious beliefs, communal solidarity, and protective prayers. In contrast, Japanese komoriuta use elements of nature, rituals, and symbolic representations to teach children inner peace and harmony with nature. In both cultures, lullabies not only soothe children but also play a crucial role in transmitting cultural values and social norms across generations. In conclusion, lullabies in Azerbaijani and Japanese cultures function as powerful literary and cultural tools, supporting children’s emotional and social development while preserving cultural identity and values.
