Summary/Abstract: The paper of the The Mask and the Identity Crisis in a Transcultural Perspective focuses on the relationship between the mask phenomenon and the issue of internal tension, which we call an identity crisis. The mask phenomenon is a universal cultural phenomenon and as such attracts the question of a general anthropological starting point. The basic aspect of the mask is the relationship to something that is not obvious and that the mask is meant to emphasize. The wearer of masks is particularly human. Both exposure and veiling through masks is related to his self-expression and self-understanding. In the vast majority of cases, masks are attached to the human face. Either they represent it or they are The Mask connected to it, they are created as an overlap, a replacement or a substitute for it. Masks thus raise the fundamental problem of unity and multiplicity. The phenomenology of the mask includes the dynamics of detection and concealment. While the reasons, motives, and cultural contexts for activating this dynamic are diverse and culturally contingent, the differentiation between the concealed presence and what the mask conveys is a universal phenomenological constant. The aim of the paper, through phenomenological analysis, is to highlight the uncertain relationship between identity and mask, and to ask how much this relationship is a manifestation of a particular crisis of distinction that carries considerable transcultural potential.
