Summary/Abstract: In this study, the transmission of cultural items present in the English translation and the Spanish translation of the Dede Korkut stories has been examined. This study aims to explore the translation strategies employed in the translation of three short stories from Turkish into English and Spanish, and to compare the extent to which the translators reflect Turkish culture in these translations. In this study, as micro-strategies, the strategies of translation of cultural items proposed by N. Berrin Aksoy (2002), “Literal translation, Transference, Adaptation, Neutralization, Functional equivalent, Explanation, Deletion”, and as macrostrategies, the translation strategies “Domestication” and “Foreignization” proposed by Venuti (1995) have been used. According to the study’s results, the most commonly used micro-translation strategy for transferring cultural items in the English translation of stories translated with TEDA is “Transference.” The least used strategy was “Deletion”. In the Spanish translation, the most used microstrategy is “Adaptation”; the least used micro-strategy is “Deletion”, as in English. When macro strategies are examined, the “Foreignization” strategy is used with 60.53% and the “Domestication” strategy with 39.47% for the English translation. As for the target language, Spanish, the frequency of using these strategies is equal. Especially considering macro strategies, it is concluded that the English translation tends to follow more closely the source culture, while in the Spanish translation, both the source and target cultures are considered. In the English translation, it has been determined that remaining faithful to the source language serves to promote Turkish culture in this language and on a universal scale.
