Summary/Abstract: The concept of the Varieties of Capitalism (VoC), developed by P.A. Hall and D. Soskice, focuses on the analysis of the institutional system of the economy, which determines the way in which enterprises are functioning. The authors distinguish two basic models of capitalism: liberal market economy (LME) and coordinated market economy (CME). This concept has soon acquired the status of one of the basic concepts in comparative systems. The paper is an attempt at critical analysis of that approach. The author points to several significant limitations of the VoC concept, such as a dichotomic division of economic systems, underestimation of the role of government, or diminution of the importance of globalization and convergence. The analysis leads to the conclusion that the research approach based on the comparison of institutional framework for the activity of enterprises does not suffice for defining and classifying the varieties of capitalism existing in the world.
