Summary/Abstract: The paper concerns the ability to argue as one of the basic interpersonal competencies needed in various areas of human activities. Argumentation is considered in the context of the role it plays in rhetorical communication and the demand that is noticeable in social discourse. The main part of the paper is an analysis of the answers provided by representatives of various levels and forms of education in the field of rhetoric and argumentation: students and graduates of applied rhetoric, organizers of school tournaments and academic Oxford debates in Poland, school teachers, university lecturers and researchers of broadly understood rhetorical communication. Based on their answers, specific conclusions were drawn to formulate a diagnosis of the contemporary education system in terms of the presence of elements of argumentation education. The last element is the analysis of the ways of understanding argumentation present in the curricula and textbooks as well as the assessment of the possibilities of their use in school education. The assumption of the paper is the belief that there is currently no need to introduce a new subject in this field into school education. However, it is important that elements of this knowledge and the development of practical skills are present in education.
