Summary/Abstract: Liberty in Antiquity underwent a significant evolution, moving from Oriental societies characterized by the concentration of power in the hands of the absolute monarch, where autonomy belonged exclusively to the ruler, to the Greek world, where an incipient form of civic and political freedom emerged. Although limited to the category of citizens and exclusive to a restricted part of the population, Greek liberty marks an essential moment in the development of political consciousness, transforming freedom from an attribute of the sovereign into a right exercised within the political community.
