The article identifies issues affecting the difficulties of using narrative interviews – defining the learning activity, the difficulty of research participants to construct an independent narrative and the presence of silence during interviews, as well as the non-narrative nature of the learning topic. These challenges are illustrated with examples of a typical interviews conducted as part of the study ‘Educational pathways of adult learners in Poland’. The confrontation with examples of encountered problems in the conducted study allows questions to be raised about the ethical and methodological contexts of including problematic narratives in the analyzed research material. Also, solutions adopted towards atypical interviews relating to the use of research tools and a modification of the analytical approach are presented.
