The effectiveness of VR-based teaching in high-altitude training

Summary/Abstract: Technological advancement has led to the integration of modern solutions into the training process across various industrial sectors. An example of this is the application of virtual reality (VR) in enhancing the competencies and skills of employees. A literature review indicates that the use of this method can mitigate the exposure of workers to hazards and reduce the costs associated with the training process; however, it requires refinement and detailed research. Our study aimed to verify the effectiveness of VR application in high-altitude training. The experiment compared the effects of three different training versions: a) conducted in real training conditions, b) standard VR replicating real conditions, c) educational VR with virtual mentor support in addition to replicating conditions. The study involved a sample of 739 individuals (94.7% male). Training effects were assessed based on a practical exam, comparing its results after each training version. Statistical analysis using the Kruskal-Wallis test revealed no differences between the real and standard VR versions, but significant differences between the educational VR and real version. The obtained results provide a basis for the application of educational VR as an effective tool for enhancing competencies in economically and technically demanding training conditions. Further research on the application of this method is necessary to develop appropriate solutions.
