Digital inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities as a practical example of lifelong learning for counteracting social exclusion

Summary/Abstract: There is no denying that in the 21st century, part of our lives is reflected or extended in the digital world. Unfortunately, not everyone is still able to use information and communication technology (ICT) or to do so in an appropriate and safe manner. The group of digitally excluded people includes those with intellectual disabilities. This article illustrates the dimensions of digital exclusion of people with intellectual disabilities and its consequences, and above all, emphasises the essence of digital inclusion. The text aims to present the theoretical basis and principles of digital inclusion as a practical example of lifelong learning, which is a way of counteracting social exclusion – in the described case of people with intellectual disabilities. Digital inclusion is directly related to social inclusion, and people with disabilities belong to a group at risk of both digital and social exclusion. This is confirmed by the statistics cited in the text and an overview of international research on the ‘being and non-being’ of this social group in digital space, which is the starting point for demonstrating the need and multidimensionality of activities for digital inclusion. Media education and its guidelines for working with people with intellectual disabilities, presented in the text, are intended to show the connections with the basics of lifelong learning, so as to see their reciprocity with the foundations of theory and research, and above all in practice. The text is part of the work on a doctoral dissertation, which is based on auto ethnographic research by the author – a digital educator for people with disabilities – on the social aspect of digital inclusion for people with intellectual disabilities. However, the article is the result of theoretical considerations, hence its review-like character.
