Summary/Abstract: Research on contemporary experiences should be appropriate to its diverse facets. It must take into account new phenomena in everyday life, guided by an open and reflective analytical approach. Such analyses should be characterized by the rejection of normativity, moralization, criticism, stigmatization, and stereotypical perceptions of the specificity of family experiences. Therefore, making the subject of research the experiences that are traditionally associated with adverse consequences, such as those resulting from migration, the concept of non-nuclear families, and others, may pose a particular challenge for researchers and the research process itself. Individuals examined as representatives of the dominant narrative surrounding non-normative family experiences can also find themselves trapped in this situation. In the presented article, I primarily refer to examples based on my own research interviews. I highlight the pitfalls that can arise from the researcher’s assumptions about family life rather than from actual knowledge of it. I discuss the determinants of interpretive premises, the ambiguity of data, and their selected consequences.
