Summary/Abstract: The developments in the Time of Troubles in Russia were conveyed by a number of sources, including the memoirs of several English contemporaries — George Wilkins, considered to have written a book on Sir Thomas Smith’s embassy to Moscow, John Merrick, to whom a report to the British government on Ivan Bolotnikov’s insurgency is commonly attributed, and Henry Brereton, a mercenary in Vassily Shuysky’s army. In recent decades the Russian historians have made significant effort to ascertain the origin of the English authors’ memoirs on Russia and their credibility as a source on Russian history. To that end, the scholars tried to identify the sources the English relied on, their goals, the features specific to their memoirs, the latter being essential to understanding the reasons and consequences of the tragic events which befell Muscovy in the early 17th century.
