Nizhni Novgorod servitors corporation before and after the Time of Troubles: first results of the study

Summary/Abstract: This study focuses on the phenomenon of the gentry corporations. Nizhny Novgorod gentry corporation, which was one of the largest in the Muscovite state, became the object of our study. This region was preferred for study due to a special combination of different factors in its history, such as early-forming, border location and exclusively active participation of its representatives in the events of the Troubles. The study is based on the method of comparative analysis of the materials of Pomestni prikaz (landowning department) and Razryadni prikaz (military service department). The main conclusion of this study is the following. Despite the serious challenges that it had to overcome during the Troubles, Nizhny Novgorod gentry corporation remained highly stable. Moreover, in the first quarter of the 17th century its staff and structure stabilized.
