Summary/Abstract: In this article the authors consider the problem of the features and characteristics of the Moldovan state imposture on the example of biography of «the Cossack adventurer Ivan Pidkowa», which in the 70s 16th century, managed to become the Moldavian ruler and independently carry out internal and external policies. The paper also analyzes the available sources — Polish chronicles of Marcin Bielski, Reinhold Heidenstein, historical opus of Italian Antonio Gvanini, Moldavian chronicles of Grigore Ureke and Nikolai Kostin. Authors highlight the phenomenon of imposture on the one hand as the interpretative model generalizing the findings of Soviet scientists, on the other — taking the conceptual approaches and scientific views of Romanian researchers. In addition, the authors, at the level of historiographical retrospective, give a comparative analysis of the essential roots of social and political nature of the sources of imposture in medieval Moldavia and Muscovy in terms of motivation of its origin, which, in arguing against the Soviet medieval studies, brought up for discussion in the mid-60s of the twentieth century a well-known Romanian historian D. Dzhuresku.
