Summary/Abstract: The paper presents the basic premises, principles and methods of critical discourse analysis and outlines its application in political speech studies. In the light of this interdisciplinary approach, language use is viewed as a form of social practice, traceable from the micro-level of the discourse event to the macro framework of social structure. In critical discourse analysis, particular attention is paid to phenomena such as domination, power, ideology, control and manipulation, which play an essential role in the emergence and maintenance of social order or, alternatively, social problems. In the treatment of these and other issues, several larger schools and strands of scholarship are distinguished. Regardless of the variations among them, one of the guiding ideas is that the linguistic space (discourse) and the extra-linguistic environment (society) are in constant interaction. Discourse, and political discourse in particular, always bears the imprint of its context of generation and at the same time is a factor in its constitution, and this can be distinguished at the level of text and at the level of subtext. Here, several main perspectives will be traced within critical discourse analysis, namely: socio-cognitive, socio-cultural, and discourse-historical.
