Distance education among primary school students from rural areas in East-Central Europe

Summary/Abstract: Distance education was introduced on a mass scale upon the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Numerous studies into this subject matter, which mainly use the CAWI survey method, have been conducted to date. This paper aims to answer the question regarding the course of distance education in rural areas of the Visegrád Group. With the use of the auditorium questionnaire technique, the students from rural areas in Poland n=552, the Czech Republic n=337, Slovakia n=300 and Hungary n=305 were surveyed. The research sample was selected using purposive sampling. The students of the final years of primary school were selected for the study. The results of research indicate that the surveyed students had appropriate technical conditions for participating in distance education, half of them participated in all the lessons. The majority of the respondents declare that the quality of online lessons was lower than the traditional ones. The students indicated trouble with focusing during online classes, they had difficulty understanding the material and were aware of learning losses, which were given rise during distance education. In case of problems with online learning, the students mainly resorted to their parents’ or peers’ help and were looking for ready-made solutions on the internet. The course of distance education was very similar in all the researched countries.
